We Got there - Captains Day @ Orchardleigh Golf Club
On a fine and sunny day, Captains Day was celebrated at Orchardleigh Golf Club with a record attendance in modern times to support Bruce Wickes. The Course was in excellent condition with greens that were true if not always as quick as we probably would have expected.
As the first group sped away in their buggies, the rest of us walked around this scenic parkland course. With a better ball team game, singles stableford on the back 9 and a Par 3 Competition there was plenty to play for and an opportunity to win the silverware provided by Bruce.
The team game won by Barry Hathway & Steve Tottle was a runaway victory scoring a magnificent 48 points, some 4 points ahead of the second place "Always the bridesmaid Harrison" & his partner Paul Brown. Barry is obviously the partner to have as this the second victory of the year. His reward a loss of 4 shots of his handicap!!!
They always say "beware of the injured golfer" and so it appears to be true, returning from a cricket injury, Paul Brown secured victory with a score of 23 Points for the 9 Hole Stableford Competition played over the back nine holes. . Hope he likes cleaning as he won two pieces of silverware for his days performances. Runner up with another great score of 22 points was Kevin Cheeseman who probably thought he has done enough to secure victory.
The Par 3 Competition is now hotting up and with some steady performances some golfers have forged ahead of the pack. However with 3 meeting left and the best 4 rounds to count, there is still time for someone to emerge.
Our next meeting is at Cumberwell Park on August 9 2018 and is the final leg of the "Wiltshire Swing". This is another great course which recently appeared on Sky Sports as they hosted an event for the "Europro Tour". It will be great if we can match the numbers at Orchardleigh.
